(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 23 - Emilia Beretti, the president of the court of Reggio Emilia, on Tuesday defended the judge who freed a man convicted of stalking who went on to kill his victim.
Mirko Genco, 24, has confessed to killing his former partner, Cecilia Juana Hazana Loayza, in a park in the northern city on the night between Friday and Saturday, sources said.
The 34-year-old woman was stabbed to death.
Genco, who had been convicted for stalking the woman, was released following an agreement between prosecutors and his lawyers.
"Judges are not clairvoyants," said Beretti.
"They cannot know what will happen afterwards.
"What happened is the same as what happens in dozens of trials for similar crimes.
"It is extremely serious but one should not seek responsibility or make scapegoats of those who have done nothing but apply the law". (ANSA).
