Man, 90, kills wife, tries to kill self

(ANSA) - Poggibonsi, February 21 - A 90-year-old man strangled his 82-year-old wife to death in her sleep and then tried to kill himself at Poggibonsi near Siena on Thursday.
    The man first dived into the nearby River Staggia to drown himself but was foiled by the low water level, he told police.
    He then returned home and tried to cut his wrists but could not go through with it, police said.
    The man said in a letter to his two children he was convinced that his wife was no longer in her right mind.
    She had been suffering from influenza, police said.
