Critical situation in migrant centres

Efforts to improve situation frustrated by inmates says ministry

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, October 19 - Italy's authority for the rights of inmates said in a report on Friday that it had found "critical situations" at four CPR centres for migrants who are set to be deported. It said the lack of communal areas and the absence of certain elements of furniture "prejudice the quality of life in a significant way" at the centres at Brindisi-Restinco, Palazzo San Gervasio, Bari and Turin. The report said there was a "risk of situations of degradation, even in the exercise of the most elementary, primary rights".
The interior ministry said that it worked "constantly" to improve the centres and maintain acceptable living standards "in full respect of the rights and dignity of the person.
"But every effort made, at significant cost, is often frustrated by the continual, violent behaviour of the guests, damaging the areas and the furnishings, with negative consequences on their own life conditions".
