Migrant kids back in Lodi school canteen

Thanks to money raised by appeal

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Lodi, October 16 - Migrant children will be able to return to school canteens in the northern city of Lodi on Tuesday after many were separated in recent days and had to eat packaged lunches brought from home due to controversial documentation requirements demanded by the local council. The city regulation demands that migrant parents must submit documentation from their countries of origin about their wealth and income, in addition to certification from the Italian authorities, as part of means-testing to benefit from discounts on canteen and school-bus services.
Over 200 children reportedly ended up being excluded from the canteens as they were unable to produce the documentation.
The families had been contacted, however, and told they can pay the discounted rate, with the difference being made up from 60,000 raised by an appeal for the children.
