ANM wrong on legitimate self defence

Minister denies 'DIY justice' and 'legitimising murder' claims

(ANSA) - Rome, September 19 - Magistrates' union ANM were wrong to say new looser legitimate self-defence rules in a bill before parliament risked "legitimising murder" and leading to "DIY justice", Justice Minister Alfonso Bonafede said Wednesday.
"It's an incorrect phrase and very generic," he told Italian TV.
The head of the ANM is fully entitled to express perplexity, of course he has, but the phrase is generic and doesn't say anything about the text (of the bill)".
ANM chief Francesco Minisci told the Senate justice committee Tuesday that the government's bill boosting legitimate self-defence could lead to "DIY justice".
    "There's a risk of legitimising murder...of creating a do-it-yourself justice," he said.
"It would be opportune to stop and reflect," Minisci said, reiterating that the current law is a good one.
"There's no need for further legislative intervention," said the ANM chief.
The bill would introduce rules similar to the US stand your ground laws where virtually all forms of self-defence on one's property are deemed legitimate.
