Ischia not community of illegal builders (3)

(ANSA) - Ischia, August 23 - The mayor of quake-hit Ischia, Enzo Ferrandino, on Wednesday urged the media not to portray the islanders as a "community of illegal builders". Saying "enough is enough", he said "tell it like it is". Ferrandino was speaking after the civil protection department slammed the use of "substandard material" in many of the building that collapsed, and Transport and Infrastructure Minister Graziano Delrio joined those saying that a magnitude 4.0 quake should not have caused the damage it did.
    Two women were killed by the quake that injured 42 people, one seriously, and left 2,600 homeless on the Bay of Naples island.
    As Naples prosecutors weighed opening a probe into multiple manslaughter, Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca called for an end to "chatter" about illegal buildings after years in which both centre-left and centre-right administrations issued amnesties for illegal construction.
    Campania, the region around Naples, is Italy's worst offender as regards illegal building infractions with 17% of such crimes at the latest tally, according to environmental group Legambiente.
    The quake grabbed front-page headlines in Wednesday's Italian press with coverage focusing on the rescue of three brothers aged seven months, eight years and 11 years.
