(ANSA) - Vibo Valentia, December 14 - Carabinieri police and anti-mafia prosecutors said Wednesday they have wiped out the leadership of the Bonavota clan of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia by carrying out six arrests in the city of Vibo Valentia.
The Bonavota clan is based in the area village of Sant'Onofrio.
The suspects named as Domenico, Pasquale and Nicola Bonavota, Onofrio Barbieri, Giuseppe Lopreiato, and Domenico Febbraro face mafia conspiracy, malicious damage, murder, extortion, and illegal weapons charges.
They are believed to have ordered and executed two hits in 2004 and to have carried out violent attacks on company premises owned by local businessman Filippo Callipo in 2004 and 2016.
Investigators are also probing lawyer Giuseppe Di Renzo on charges of aggravated aiding and abetting for smuggling messages out of prison on behalf of former Lo Bianco clan boss Andrea Mantella. Mantella subsequently turned State's witness, telling investigators that the 2004 murders of Raffaele Cracolici and Domenico Di Leo were part of a clan turf war over a rapidly expanding industrial area in the town of Maierata.
