Bilal Erdogan probe 'not shelved' (3)

Turkish chief's son investigated for money laundering

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Bologna, December 9 - A preliminary investigations judge has rejected a request to shelve a money-laundering investigation into Bilal Erdogan, the son of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ANSA learned Friday. The judge ordered prosecutors to question Murat Hakan Uzan, a Turkish businessman and political opponent of Erdogan who is wanted by Turkish authorities and is in exile in France. Uzan has called on Italian authorities to investigate sums of money brought to Italy by Bilal, allegedly as part of a money-laundering scheme. Bologna prosecutors moved to shelve the probe in September, saying they found no evidence of wrongdoing. The case has caused friction between Italy and Turkey, with Erdogan telling Italian public broadcaster RAI News 24 that the investigation involving his son Bilal could put bilateral relations "in difficulty".
Erdogan's son had been studying at John Hopkins University in Bologna.
