(ANSA) - Ancona, December 7 - Rail passengers travelling between Ancona and Fabriano in the central Marche region were taken to hospital with suspected mild smoke poisoning on Wednesday after the train's engine caught fire while it was in a tunnel.
No-one suffered major injuries in the blaze.
The passengers' condition was said to be good and they were expected to be released shortly.
The incident occurred just after 7:30 am local time when the train was in the Passo Varano tunnel. Railway staff used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze, which is thought to have been caused by a spill of oil on the engine. Roughly 15 people are said to have been on the train at the time. Normal railway services have resumed.
