(ANSA) - Naples, December 6 - A 37-year-old Ukrainian woman was arrested on attempted murder charges after police prevented her from throwing a plastic bag containing her newborn baby into a trash bin in Naples' central Piazza Garibaldi in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Immigrants in the area alerted authorities that the woman had just given birth and was about to get rid of the baby, police headquarters said in a statement.
When questioned, she initially said the bag contained rubbish, then said it was a dead baby. "The little one was wrapped in clothing and almost suffocating," said police officer Riccardo Majone. "When we removed the clothing we realized he was alive".
"It was a good feeling - saving a child," he added.
The baby weighing 2.7 kilos was hospitalized in good condition at Loreto Mare Hospital in Naples.
"The baby has been adopted by the entire ward," said Hospital Director Maria Corvino. "They're thinking about a name... maybe Nicola, because today is St Nicholas".
New mothers on the ward have also pitched in on behalf of the newcomer, she said.
"We're used to this kind of solidarity," Corvino said.
