(ANSA) - Alessandria, October 20 - A German man who strangled his terminally ill wife to death then tried to kill himself may face aggravated murder charges, investigators said Thursday.
Gunther Albert Lindmeier Schleicher, 51, was detained yesterday in the woods of Capanne di Marcarolo Regional Park lying between Liguria and Piedmont, where he killed terminal cancer patient Heidi Catharina Lindmeir, 53.
He strangled her with a ligature, then tried to do the same to himself. Cyclists raised the alarm when they spotted him in a confusional state. Carabinieri police found several bottles of denatured alcohol in the couple's car. Investigators say the two may have entered into a murder-suicide pact and may have been planning to douse themselves with the alcohol.
The man is hospitalized under police watch in Genoa.
An autopsy has been ordered on the victim.
