(ANSA) - Piacenza, June 22 - A 29-year-old motorist was arrested Wednesday after he ran over and killed a cyclist in what is one of the first applications of Italy's new vehicular homicide law.
Passed in March, that law sets prison terms of 2-7 years for drivers who wrongfully kill one person, of 12 years for killing one person while drunk, and up to 18 years if there are multiple victims. Licenses can be confiscated for a term ranging from five to 30 years.
The Piacenza driver hit the 36-year-old cyclist with his SUV while trying to overtake another vehicle in a no-passing lane, police said.
