At least 58 women killed this year by partners or former lovers

(ANSA) - Trieste, June 10 - The ex husband of a Serbian woman who went missing in Trieste on April 26 was arrested on Friday for allegedly committing the latest in a series of femicides in Italy, ANSA sources said. The man is suspected of killing the woman and hiding her body on the Karst Plateau, which crosses the border between Italy and Slovenia. He was detained after investigators gathered significant evidence against him and he has confessed, the sources said. At least 58 women in Italy have been killed by a partner or former lover so far in 2016, and more than 155 have died this way since January 2015, recent figures show. The term femicide is used to describe the killing of women that is often linked to gender-based violence and commonly involves spurned former partners. The recent spate of cases has prompted many Italian women to hang red blankets from their windows in protest and call on the government to take action.
