(ANSA) - Bergamo, April 5 - A nurse who is being investigated for voluntary manslaughter in the suspicious deaths of at least six patients in a hospital in the village of Piario near Bergamo is to remain on unpaid leave through the end of the month, sources said Monday.
Milan-born Anna Rinelli, 43, is suspected of voluntary manslaughter by injecting heavy doses of Valium and other tranquilizers to patients to keep them sedated during her night shifts, but who subsequently died. She has been under investigation since December last year, when prosecutors ordered six bodies exhumed for toxicology testing. Those results are not in yet.
A former patient at the Piario hospital told police that he "lost four days of his life" after falling into a coma beginning on the night of November 1, when Rinelli was on duty.
