Rome metro maintenance staff stop strike

Union to discuss workers' future at prefecture Friday

(ANSA) - Rome, December 10 - Striking Rome metro maintenance workers returned to work late Wednesday on the grounds that a meeting has been set to discuss their future Friday, Susanna Felicetti, the regional secretary of the FIOM trade union, announced.
The 50 workers, employed by Atac contractor CAF Italia, were due to strike from December 9-16 in protest against a mass sacking announced after the Rome public transport company decided it would no longer outsource the job. However, "in the face of the openness of the Rome prefecture to discuss job protection measures for the CAF Italia workers, FIOM has decided to cancel the strike," Felicetti said.
On Wednesday Rome Prefect Franco Gabrielli said metro staff could be ordered into work after the National Strike Guarantee Authority deemed the strike to be illegal.
