More than 12% of school meals wasted

(ANSA) - Rome, November 27 - As much as 12.6% of food cooked for school meals is left in plates becoming waste. As much as 11% of first courses is wasted, 13% of second courses, 22% of vegetables, 10% of fruit and 10% of bread.
    In money terms 0.18 cents per meal go into the bin out of an average cost of 4.6 euros a meal, according to a pilot study carried out by Oricon, the Observatory for Collective restauranting and Nutrition, presented in Rome for a meeting entitled "Collective catering and the heritage of Expo. The value of food, from the struggle against waste to food education".
    The probe was carried out monitoring 64,000 school meals served to 7000 pupils aged 3 to 11.
    As many as 12 million meals for the poor could be prepared if the 18 cents wasted in school meals could be eliminated, commented Carlo Scrarsciotto, Oricon president.
    "Reducing waste is possible and should be put into practise as emerged from Expo Milano 2015".
