Mafia 'plotting to kill Alfano'

Reprisal for beefing up 41-bis prison regime say wiretaps

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Palermo, November 20 - Sicilian bosses have been plotting to kill Interior Minister Angelino Alfano because he has beefed up the tough high-security prison regime for mafiosi called 41 bis, according to wiretaps made in an operation against the Corleone clan.
Alfano should be eliminated "if there is an agreement", two Corleone members are heard to say.
"They rose to power thanks to us. Angelino Alfano is a pig.
Who brought him here with the votes of the friends? He wound up there with (three-time former premier Silvio) Berlusconi and now they've forgotten everything".
Alfano "should end up like Kennedy", they are heard saying.
Italian police on Friday arrested Corleone Mafia boss Rosario Lo Bue and others in a major operation against the clan.
Lo Bue was arrested in 2008 but then freed, police said.
Police said the top echelons of the Corleone clan had been dismantled.
Separately, police arrested eight people suspected of belonging to Catania's Santapaola Ercolano Mafia clan.
The eight were arrested on suspicion of racketeering, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and extortion, police said.
