(ANSA) - Naples, November 3 - An 11-year-old Italian girl with AIDS spent her first day at a lower secondary school near Caserta in the southern region of Campania on Tuesday after being admitted tanks to the intervention of Education Minister Stefania Giannini.
Initially her application for entry was rejected in September.
"The girl has been admitted and is in the classroom with a special-needs teacher," school principal Michele Di Martino said. "Now we need to leave her in peace and put this episode full of misunderstandings and misinterpretations behind us," he added.
Meanwhile parents concerned about the risk of infection for their own children met with the girl's paediatrician and Di Martino for reassurance.
At the end of the meeting they set up a committee to ensure that the girl is properly assisted.
Minister Giannini also gave her own reassurances, inviting parents not to "remain prisoner to an albeit understandable fear that is, however, unfounded".
