Sardinia, other regions to experience torrential downpours

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, October 8 - A Mediterranean cyclone coming from Algeria will bring rainstorms, strong winds and high seas to Italy's central and southern regions Friday and at the weekend, the weather service said Thursday.
"Several central and southern regions will be at high risk of torrential downpours and high winds tomorrow," forecasters said.
"Adverse weather conditions will peak Saturday with rainstorms...that could cause potentially critical situations".
Sardinia will likely be the first to see intense rain on Friday, which will travel across to the mainland overnight and into Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, northern Puglia and southern Tuscany.
On Saturday, Calabria and Marche will be added to the list of regions contending with intense downpours that could dump over 100 liters of water per square meter of land, forecasters said. Heading north, the Emilia Romagna region on Saturday will see overcast skies and rain in the Apennine hills areas.
The rest of Italy's north will be overcast.
The cyclone is expected to leave the Italian peninsula and head to the Balkans on Sunday, forecasters said.
