Stefano Savi attacked in a case of mistaken identity

(ANSA) - Milan, October 2 - A university student who was almost blinded when acid was thrown in his face last November told a trial court Friday he didn't see whether his attacker was a man or a woman. "It was someone shorter than me, but I can't say if it was a man and a woman," he said in testimony at the trial of Martina Levato, 22, a former student at Milan's private Bocconi University, and her boyfriend Alexander Boettcher, a 30-year-old real estate broker.
Both are already serving 14-year sentences for a December 28 acid attack on Levato's ex-boyfriend Pietro Barbini, who risks losing the use of his right eye and was left with third-degree burns to his face and body. Savi told the court his attacker wore jeans, a dark hoody and a scarf covering his or her face.
"I don't study any more because I can barely see," Savi added. "I'm blind in one eye and almost blind in the other. I've had 12 skin grafts". Prosecutors believe the couple attacked Savi because they had seen him in a night club and mistook him for their intended victim - Giuliano Carparelli, another ex-boyfriend of Levato.
