30 arrested in Catania mafia sweep

(ANSA) - Catania, June 16 - Police on Tuesday carried out arrest warrants against 30 people on suspicion of mafia association, drug dealing, extortion and armed robbery in a major blow to the Mazzei clan based in the eastern Sicilian city of Catania.
    The suspects include Sebastiano Mazzei, whose jailed father Santo was a major figure in the Catania underworld and head of the Carcagnusi clan of Cosa Nostra.
    Mazzei is already in prison custody after being caught in April following a year on the run.
    Several alleged affiliates of the clan were arrested earlier in the probe after being caught collecting protection money from retailers.
    Drugs and weapons were also seized during investigations.
