(ANSA) - Rome, May 29 - Police searched Roma camps in Rome's suburbs in the early hours Friday for two Roma minors who fled on foot and vanished after a speeding car they were using to escape police careened through a group of nine people, killing a 44-year-old woman, police said.
As officers combed the encampents in the areas of Monachina and Casal Lumbroso between Thursday night and Friday morning amid growing public outrage, the sister of one of the two boys was quoted as saying "my brother will give himself up this afternoon".
The fugitive's family made an appeal Thursday for the teenager to give himself up.
Investigators meanwhile examined closed-circuit television footage of the accident in the Battistini area but discovered there were no shots of the fleeing teenagers, the police sources said.
Police have not been able to confirm a statement by the father of one of the boys, who is aged 17, claiming that he was at the wheel of the speeding car.
Police agents from the Rome flying squad are handling the delicate investigation, the sources said.
