commissioner is among 39 people arrested Tuesday in an operation
that busted three Palermo mafia clans on suspicion of drug
trafficking, loan sharking and running protection rackets.
Gaetano Vivirito is accused of corruption.
Investigators say he accepted money from mobster Antonino
Calvaruso - owner of a car wash where mafia summits were held -
in exchange for canceling fines imposed after a police
inspection.
Wiretaps reveal Vivirito expressed disdain for fellow
officers who upheld the law, whom he reportedly defined as
"cuckolds".
