Rome airport toxic fire probe

(ANSA) - Rome, May 25 - Prosecutors in Civitavecchia have opened a probe into the production of toxic chemicals by a big fire at Rome's Fiumicino Aiport that snarled traffic for days two weeks ago, judicial sources said Monday. Two people are under investigation for endangering workers' health after dioxin and two other toxic agents called PCB and furan were found at the site. The two being probed are a director at the local ASL health agency and a manager of the airport company ADR, sources said. Last week five air-conditioning maintenance workers were placed under investigation in connection with the fire, which destroyed much of Terminal 5. The workers were being probe for arson, after surveillance video showed the workers on duty in the room where the fire broke out.
    In the video, investigators said the workers set up and turned on a portable air-conditioning unit, apparently to prevent an electrical panel from overheating.
    However the air-conditioning unit reportedly turned itself off because it wasn't connected to an external power source.
