(ANSA) - Rome, April 29 - Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin
said Wednesday she is sending a task force to the southern
Calabria region after a newborn girl died in an ambulance there
on Tuesday.
"We need to shed light on what happened yesterday in
Calabria, where a newborn died on an ambulance between Vibo
Valentia and Catanzaro hospital," she said.
The child born by Cesarean in hospital in the city of Vibo
Valentia lived just one hour before dying of respiratory failure
on the ambulance that was taking her to another hospital in the
city of Catanzaro.
Doctors decided to transfer her when they realized she was
experiencing respiratory distress soon after birth.
Local prosecutors are investigating the incident, and
5-Star Movement (M5S) MP Dalila Nesci urged government action in
Calabria, where she said "neonatal intensive care is in critical
condition" due to budget cuts.
