(ANSA) - Washington, March 3 - The body of a young Italian tourist killed by a slab of ice from a glacier during an excursion in Alaska was recovered Tuesday, State police said Tuesday.
Alexander Hellweger, aged 28, died Sunday in the Chugach Mountains when he was crushed by ice that calved from the glacier north of Anchorage.
He was part of a group of eight Italian and Belgian tourists and their guides that visited the glacier near Lake George at the end of a day-long helicopter skiing excursion.
Alaska State troopers said they were not able to immediately recover the body because of the danger posed by the possibility of other slabs of ice calving off the glacier.
Reports said Hellweger was from Sand in Taufers in northern Italy, near the Austrian border.
