(ANSA) - Rome, January 30 - Heavy storms battered the Italian peninsula overnight and continued Friday, causing two injuries in Rome and bringing 137kmh winds to the Piedmontese Alps, ANSA sources said.
Strong winds uprooted trees in various parts of the nation's capital, where two men aged 65 and 27 were hospitalized with head trauma and contusions to the upper body after being hit by flying branches in two separate incidents. In the northern region of Piedmont, winds pushing 60kmh tore through the Susa Valley, where the town of Bardonecchia saw 28cm of snow fall through the night.
Higher up the Alps, winds blew at 80-137kmh in various parts of the mountain range dividing Italy from France as temperatures plunged to -17 Celsius above the Alpine village of Sestriere and -32 on the Monte Rosa peak.
