Man indicted for 8-euro chocolate theft

Judge overrules prosecutor suggesting case be shelved

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) Genoa, January 29 - A Genoese man caught allegedly stealing a box of chocolates worth 8 euros from a supermarket must stand trial for the crime despite a prosecutor recommending clemency, a judge ruled Thursday.
Prosecutor Nicola Piacente urged the case be shelved on grounds of the small value of the chocolates and because the alleged culprit had no criminal records, as well as to avoid clogging up Italy's judicial system.
Lawyers representing the supermarket opposed shelving the case, however, and Judge Silvia Carpanini ruled the trial for the theft will be held.
