(ANSA) - Rome, December 4 - The Italian doctor who contracted Ebola while fighting the epidemic in Sierra Leone is stable but remains in very serious condition, specialists at Rome's Spallanzani Institute for Infectious Diseases said Friday.
The 50-year-old man was transferred to intensive care and remains on a respirator after his condition deteriorated with a fever on Thursday, said his treatment team.
The patient, who contracted the deadly virus while working for medical-aid NGO Emergency, started treatment with a new experimental medicine brought in from abroad earlier this week.
As part of the therapy, the patient has also received plasma transfusions from survivors of the disease.
