Archbishop demands action after Eternit verdict

Government must act to change statute of limitations

(ANSA) - Turin, November 21 - The Archbishop of Turin, Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia, urged the Italian government Friday to "put on the agenda immediately" judicial reforms after a controversial supreme court ruling in the Eternit asbestos case.
"This is a tragedy for people who suffer and cry for their dead loved ones," said the prelate, "the judicial system must give concrete signs of trust and hope".
The archbishop spoke out after Italy's highest appeals body, the Court of Cassation, overturned an 18-year prison sentence against a Swiss tycoon whose now-defunct Eternit concern ran several asbestos cement plants blamed for more than 2,000 deaths.
Nosiglia appealed to politicians "to put on the agenda immediately (the) reform of the judicial system and the norms on statutes of limitation".
"When there is an error there must be a sentence that recognises that error," he added, "there is so much talk about judicial reform ... then when the case is over it gets forgotten".
