Galletti says rubbish 'intolerable'

Environmental minister says Unblock Italy decree will help

(ANSA) - Rome, October 22 - Forty percent of Italy's rubbish goes into landfills, an "enormous quantity" which is "intolerable" and brings environmental risks, EU sanctions and the attention of organized crime specialized in illegal waste trafficking, said Environmental Minister Gian Luca Galletti on Wednesday.
Galletti said the 'Unblock Italy' decree, which contains measures to streamline business processes and untangle some of the country's bureaucracy, will help the waste management sector "rebalance" along socio-economic lines and among regions.
While some regions in Italy use incinerators and recycling programs, others have closed landfills and export their waste to be incinerated in foreign countries, where "paradoxically, foreign countries profit from burning our waste", Galletti said.
Article 35 of the Unblock Italy decree defines incinerators as strategic and has the objective of making the structures more efficient.
