(ANSA) - Milan, October 21 - The Lonely Planet travel guide has added Milan to the top of its list as one of its best cities in the world to visit next year, thanks to its hosting of the Expo 2015.
The guide, which suggests travel trends, says Milan will be one of the best spots to spend time in, ranking it in third spot just behind the American capital of Washington and the fjords of Norway.
"We are very flattered but not surprised," said Franco D'Alfonso, a Milan city councilor with responsibilities for commerce and tourism.
"In recent years, Milan has in fact become more and more popular with tourists and maintains the reputation of being an attractive post for investment and new economic activities," added D'Alfonso.
The wide array of countries now building pavilions to participate in the six-month Expo that opens in May will drawn millions of visitors to Milan and Italy in general, he added.
The Lonely Planet guide names 10 countries, regions, and cities to next year's list of the best, including Singapore's celebrations marking its 50 years of independence.
The theme of Expo is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life with the mascot nicknamed Foody representing a world of foods featuring banana lips, garlic nose, a figgy beard and pineapple topnot.
