(ANSA) - Padova, September 2 - Charges against two Italian cabbies arrested in Germany after they drove Syrian refugees across the border have timed out, their lawyers said Tuesday.
Marco Santi and Fabio Forin are free to go after prosecutors declined to proceed, the lawyers said.
"He's just a driver," said Forin's lawyer. "He saw they had passports but it's certainly not his job to verify their authenticity".
Dozens of Italian taxi drivers have been reportedly arrested in Germany for allegedly trafficking Syrian refugees across the border, authorities said Tuesday. The refugees were fare-paying customers, and drivers are not obligated to discover their clients' immigration status, taxi drivers associations said.
