Italian resort launches first dog ambulance

Volunteers will tend to pooches taken ill at the beach

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Bibione, July 15 - Tourists wanting to take their dogs to the beach for a well-earned break need not worry about pooches catching too much Adriatic sun at this Venetian resort boasting what is billed as Italy's first canine ambulance service.
Pluto's Beach at the town of Bibione 62 km from Venice has long been equipped for four-legged visitors, but a new animal ambulance service for the summer season will deal with sunstroke, injuries sustained while playing on the sand or dogs who simply don't feel well, municipal authorities say.
The ambulance can be called on mobile number 331 8225995 and is run by volunteers equipped with oxygen, medication, stretchers and a microchip reader. Dogs who need more than first aid will be rushed to the nearest veterinary clinic. There is no charge, but dog-owners may make a donation to help sustain the pioneering service.
