(ANSA) Genoa, June 30 - Italy's mushrooming illegal
immigration tragedy "shames the world and civilisation," the
head of the Italian Bishops Conference, Cardinal Angelo
Bagnasco, said Tuesday in an unprecedented appeal to end the
loss of life in the strait of Sicily.
Speaking after the bodies of at least 30 more immigrants
were found aboard a rusting hulk heading for Sicily, the head of
the Roman Catholic Church in Italy issued an appeal he described
as "strong, determined, clear, incontestable and unequivocal
that these so very grave situations that make the world and
civilisation ashamed can be overcome for the good of and in
respect for everyone".
