Stop mafias entering economy - says president

'Worrying phenomenon' says head of State

(ANSA) - Rome, May 23 - Italy must work harder to stop its mafias infiltrating the legal economy, President Giorgio Napolitano said Friday.
"The penetration of criminal associations into the world of business and entrepreneurship is a worrying phenomenon," he told a foundation set up in the memory of Giovanni Falcone, one of two top anti-Mafia prosecutors slain in summer 1992. Napolitano called for "the involvement of society's healthy forces" to "combat all forms of conditioning" by the mafia on the economy.
The Calabrian 'Ndrangheta and the Neapolitan Camorra have posed the most powerful threats to the legal economy in recent years, outstripping Sicily's Cosa Nosta.
