(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 2 - Newly installed Bank of Italy Governor Fabio Panetta said on his second day in office Thursday that "many onerous commitments await us".
"The commitments ahead of us are many and onerous," he wrote in an email to BoI staff which ANSA was able to view. "Expectations on the results of our work are, as always, very high." He added: "I am encouraged by the knowledge that I can count on the dedication, the aptitude to serve the public interest and the high level of professionalism of all the staff".
Panetta took the helm Wednesday after Ignazio Visco endd his 12-year term.
The new governor added that the Italian central bank must be open to change.
"Continuing to apply our usual working method - based on the comparison of ideas, rigour of analysis, impartiality and transparency of decisions - will contribute to the pride of belonging to our Institute and to the effectiveness of our action", he said.
"But continuity does not mean conservation. We will have to open ourselves fully to change and innovation, as has happened in the past during important moments in the history of the Bank of Italy". (ANSA).
