(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 8 - Drivers of heavy goods vehicles are to protest against rising fuel prices and alleged government inaction on March 19, the UNATRAS union said Tuesday.
The demo, which will see HGV drivers slow or stop their articulated lorries to halt traffic across Italy, is intended to flag a "situation that has become dramatic," said the union.
"Continuing to hesitate, the government must assume the risk of triggering fresh spontaneous protest initiatives, as well as the responsibility of leaving customers without supplies".
UNATRAS said the protest "will be the first step in a dispute which, if it sadly remained without response, might turn into further and more incisive initiatives".
Petrol prices have risen eight cents to 1,953 euros a litre while diesel has also risen eight cents to 1,740 euros in the last week, the transport ministry said Tuesday.
Truck drivers recently snarled traffic across Italy, especially in the south, in a protest against rising fuel prices. (ANSA).
