Don't see attack on BoI autonomy - Visco

Autonomy of judgement counts says citing Ciampi

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, February 13 - Bank of Italy Governor Ignazio Visco said Wednesday he thought the central bank was independent, saying "I do not see what the attack on its autonomy is" after Deputy Premiers Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini said the top brass should be removed for failing to avert bank crises.
"There is a sometimes uncertain vision on responsibility and there are those who say there cannot be independence and responsibility, you have to take that into account".
He cited former central bank governor, premier and president Carlo Azegio Ciampi who he quoted as saying "we are in any case autonomous because what counts is the autonomy of judgement".
Visco said there was already a law against using the central bank's gold reserves, as suggested by Salvini.
