(ANSA) - Rome, July 29 - Five unions representing highway
workers on Friday said a national strike originally scheduled
for July 31 and August 1 has been called off after a provisional
deal was reached on a new national contract.
"After 36 hours of uninterrupted negotiations, the
hypothesis of an agreement for the renewal of the national
collective bargaining contract was signed," labor said in a
statement.
Unions said "an important result" had been reached with the
preliminary deal on a new three-year national contract expiring
on December 31, 2018, and concerning approximately 15,000
workers.
They cited, among others, salary increases and higher
benefits.
