(ANSA) - Brussels, June 30 - Mobile roaming fees are to be abolished across EU member states from June 15, 2017 under a deal reached on Tuesday.
Thereafter, consumers will pay the same price for calls, texts and mobile data wherever they are travelling in the EU.
The agreement between the European Commission, Council and Parliament also sees an initial reduction of roaming charges from April 30 next year. On that date fees will fall to €0.05 per minute for calls made, €0.02 per SMS sent and €0.05 per MB of data, excluding VAT.
This compares to current caps of €0.19, €0.06 and €0.20 respectively. The agreement, reached after long delays, also introduces stricter rules on net neutrality and the 'open internet', "protecting the right of every European to access Internet content without discrimination", a statement said.
