Whirlpool union sources optimistic

(ANSA) - Rome, June 17 - Union sources said Wednesday that some of the 800 jobs at risk by a threatened Whirlpool plant closure may be saved. The company and union leaders were meeting on ways to avoid the closure of plant at Carinaro owned by the United States-based multinational. It announced plans to lay off 2,060 workers at its Italy plants with the Carinaro factory in Caserta province slated for closure. The Italian government has called for a new business plan in line with agreements made last year when Whirlpool bought out Italian manufacturer Indesit.
