(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 29 - A newborn girl is among those missing in a migrant shipwreck off Lampedusa Friday, local officials said.
The four-month-old baby girl is among the three missing people who ended up in the sea during the rescue operations of the Trotamar III, they said.
In the Italian SAR area, the ship of the German NGO People in motion, as soon as it spotted the boat loaded with migrants, provided life jackets to some of the people, while waiting for the arrival of a coast guard patrol boat.
However, the migrants became agitated and trying to approach the NGO boat, they fell overboard.
The crew rescued 44 migrants, but three people - two men and a 4-month-old baby girl from Guinea, who was travelling with her mother - were not rescued.

Coast guard vessels are still searching.
On March 25, after a cargo ship rescued a migrant boat, three young people ended up in the sea and were never found.
The day before, a 15-year-old Guinean boy went missing at sea and on March 23 a 15-month-old baby girl was not saved after another rescue off Lampedusa.
