Holocaust Remembrance Day only for Shoah - Di Segni

Ucei president calls for responsible use of word 'genocide'

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 15 - The Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 is dedicated only to the victims of the Shoah, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) Neomi Di Segni told ANSA on Monday.
The international day of remembrance serves "to know what happened and how the genocide of the Shoah came about," said Di Segni.
"On that day, the attention of all of us must be focused on this, and only on this," she added.
"The focus is therefore also on the responsible use of words, first and foremost (the word) 'genocide'," continued Di Segni.
"If today there is an anti-Semitic hatred towards Israel and the Jewish communities, it means that not enough has been done on the issue of remembrance. And the work on remembrance obviously needs to be strengthened," she said.
Remembrance is not, added Di Segni, a "theoretical exercise in history".
"It is, rather, to understand how phenomena of hatred, distortion, and role reversal arise," she concluded.

Rome Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni, who is not related to Noemi, said in the online newspaper Shalom Monday: "A right is being evoked to trample on other rights. And to do so they are constructing a colossal propaganda lie. That is what is happening at the International Court in The Hague, in which Israel has been accused of genocide" over its campaign to eradicate Hamas in Gaza, which according to the Hamas run health ministry has reaped almost 24,000 victims.
