Interventions to clean up storied palazzi and bridges rising

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 19 - Venice is upping the fight against graffiti vandals amid a steep rise in the numbers of 'writers' who are using the lagoon city to get social media prominence with their tags, paint daubs, nonsense slogans and banal declarations of love.
The local cultural protection association 'Masegni e Nizioleti' says that 80% of the graffiti vandals who leave their mark on storied buildings are foreigners.
In some cases, the group has been able to trace them thanks to their social media handles and to report them to police.
Since the start of the year Venice authorities have stepped in on 12 occasions to clean iconic monuments, palazzi and bridges.
The vandals target the more famous sites, unlike street artists who have left memorable murals on less iconic parts of the city.
