(see related) (ANSA) - ROME, JUN 12 - Ex-premier and former European Commission President Romano Prodi paid tribute to the influence Silvio Berlusconi had after his former political rival died at the age of 86 on Monday.
"I participate in the profound condolences at the passing of Silvio Berlusconi," Prodi said.
"I remember him as a political leader who, during his long, intense time of public commitment, exercised a great influence over the life our country, having an impact not just on the institutions, but also on the lives of all citizens.
"We represented different and opposing worlds, but our rivalry never turned into sentiments of animosity on a personal level, and the debate remained within the sphere of mutual respect.
"I appreciated his support of the European cause, above all because it was confirmed and reiterated in a period in which our common European destiny was harshly and imprudently put in the dock.
"I give my deepest condolences to his family and all his loved ones". (ANSA).
