Just 1,500 migrants redistributed, solidarity failed-min

Amid 'dramatic' rise in central Med flows says Piantedosi

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 8 - Solidarity on migrants in the European Union has failed with just 1,500 migrants redistributed, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told his EU counterparts in Luxembourg Thursday.
In the face of a "dramatic increase in flows in the central Mediterranean", the redistribution of migrants among other European countries has been less than 1,500 people, which is well below the limited commitments made and is a symptom of the "failure of the principle of solidarity", he told a round table at the Home Affairs Council.
In Italy, he said, the memory of the Cutro tragedy where 94 migrants died on the Calabrian coast "is still alive", Piantedosi said, and the hotspot on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa has turned into "a migrant management centre with heavy local implications." Therefore, Piantedosi said, "strong overseas action by the Union" is needed to tackle the migration problem. (ANSA).
