Paris has understood gravity of Darmanin's comment - Tajani

'Véran's words go in the right direction' says foreign minister

(see related) (ANSA) - ROME, MAY 5 - French government spokesman Olivier Véran's statement to media shows that Paris has understood the gravity of Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin's words, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday.
"The words spoken by the French government spokesman go in the direction of someone who has understood that he has made a serious mistake, that he has offended the Italian government," Tajani told Rai News 24.
"This is not an extreme right-wing government and certain tones can be avoided," continued the foreign minister, adding "I hope that they are just the words of a minister on an election campaign".
"We have no desire to break off relations with France," he added.
European Affairs Minister Raffaele Fitto described Darmanin's allegation that Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is incapable of solving Italy's migrant problems as a "genuine faux pas".
"I believe it doesn't help Italy, France or Europe that a minister can envisage (making) such a blatant frontal attack," he added. (ANSA).
