(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 23 - The Lower House's Constitutional Affairs Committee on Thursday gave unanimous backing to a proposal to include sport in the Italian Constitution.
The constitutional amendment bill has already been approved by the Senate at first reading and must now be approved by the Lower House and then again by both houses in order to pass.
It is tabled for discussion in the Lower House in April.
"The Republic recognizes the educational and social value and the value for promoting psycho-physical well-being of sporting activity in all its forms," recites the proposed amendment.
"This is not just a symbolic reform," said rapporteur Mauro Berruto of the Democratic Party (PD).
"It creates the premise for public policies for access to the right to sports," he added. (ANSA).
