(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 18 - Pope Francis said the February 26 migrant-boat shipwreck off the Calabrian town of Cutro should have been prevented as he met a group of refugees who arrived in Europe through 'Humanitarian Corridors' on Saturday.
"That shipwreck should not have happened and it is necessary to do everything so that it does not occur again," the Argentine pontiff said regarding the disaster in which at least 87 people died.
Francis said it was necessary to reinforce legal channels for refugees and migrants to reach Europe.
"The corridors allow many children, women, men and elderly to escape gravely dangerous situations in their countries to arrive safely, legally, and with dignity to the host countries," he said.
"They cross borders and the walls of indifference that have shattered the hopes of so many people who have to wait for years in painful and unbearable situations." (ANSA).
